VCSO: Couple Shot Inside Their New Deltona Rental During Targeted Break-In

Deltona, FL – A couple who had just moved into their rented Deltona home a month ago were shot on Thursday afternoon during an apparent home invasion.

Deputies got the call at around 2:38 PM on October 27, and when they got on scene they were told by the couple that two men got into the home, at 1424 Hayward Ave., through a back sliding door. The suspects spoke with the couple and asked where someone named Javier was. Both the husband and wife told the suspects they didn’t know who that was or where they could be found. The suspects then shot the man in the leg and the woman in the arm before fleeing in an unknown vehicle.

The victims were rushed to Central Florida Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. By late Thursday they were listed in stable condition.

Officials say it’s not clear at this point whether the suspects forced their way inside the home. Detectives are still trying to figure out a motive, but the investigation so far suggests that this wasn’t a random break-in, but rather a targeted crime.

The couple’s children were at school during the shooting.

The investigation is still ongoing and no other details have been released at this time. Officials say more information will be provided when it becomes available.

Daytona Beach Shores, FL – Investigators from the Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety have made an arrest in the murder of the 34-year-old mother of three who was found stabbed at the Hawaiian Inn on September 22.

After detectives obtained a warrant, police arrested Darron Woodberry, 25, of South Daytona for Second Degree Murder. He was arrested on Thursday, October 27, at US food, where he works, without incident. He’s being held at the Volusia County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Officials say Woodberry was stopped by Officer Darius DeBarros for speeding at around 4:30 AM on September 22 as he left the area of the Hawaiian Inn. DeBarros was then dispatched to the Hawaiian Inn about an hour later, where he tried to resuscitate Olympia Cerruti. “This was just a matter of a young officer out here in the middle of the night doing good police work, which led us to our suspect,” said Director Stephan L. Dembinsky.

Investigators identified Woodberry by matching him to surveillance video at the Hawaiian Inn and from Officer DeBarros’ body-worn camera. Woodberry was also tied to Cerruti and the scene of the murder through biological evidence and phone and text records.

Volusia Law Enforcement Joint Operation Takes Down Heroin Trafficking Ring

Volusia County, FL – A major east Volusia drug trafficking organization was taken down during a joint operation involving the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO), Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), and Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) on Friday.

For the past few months, the Volusia Bureau of Investigation (VBI) and the DBPD Special Investigations Unit have been investigating the drug ring known as “The Money Team.” The organization has been known to sell heroin containing the potentially lethal opioid fentanyl.

“The opioid epidemic is a national crisis that is killing people in our community,” said Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri. “It is going to take cooperation with law enforcement, as seen here today, and private sector partnerships working together to solve this problem.”

On Friday, “Operation Tax Time” was initiated by the VBI. It targeted the organization’s ringleader, associates and street-level dealers and resulted in 19 arrest warrants and 8 search warrants for locations throughout Daytona Beach, Holly Hill, and Palm Coast. As of Friday afternoon, 10 individuals were arrested and were placedin custody and 575 grams of heroin, 2 ounces of cocaine and three guns were found.

“They are destroying families. They are destroying lives,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “How many parents in this community are grieving the loss of a loved one because what that little scumbag (drug dealer) was doing?”

Law enforcement believes The Money Team spend anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 once per month on heroin to sell in Volusia County. The organization is believed to have also sold cocaine and prescription drugs.

“VCSO and FCSO, along with other local agencies, are teaming up to get drug dealers out of our counties,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “We will not sit back and watch this epidemic continue. We’re coming after you.”

In January of this year, DBPD detectives made a controlled purchase of $60 of heroin from the ringleader, Julian Parker Miller, 31. That heroin tested positive for fentanyl. A judge allowed law enforcement to tap the organization’s phones to see their calls and texts about drug deals. VBI surveilled several locations and saw the deals occur.

The following members were arrested on Friday:

Julian Miller, 31 of Palm Coast/Daytona Beach

  • Charges: Conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance, Solicitation to deliver a controlled substance

Mark Johnson Jr., 31 of Holly Hill/Daytona Beach

  • Charges: Conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance

Mark Johnson Sr., 57 of Holly Hill/Daytona Beach

  • Charges: Conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance

Shykeem Thomas, 30 of Daytona Beach/Palm Coast

  • Charges: Solicitation to deliver a controlled substance

William Dennison, 28 of Daytona Beach

  • Charges: Solicitation to deliver a controlled substance

Justin Allen, 29 of Ormond Beach

  • Charges: Solicitation to deliver a controlled substance

Stacia Schriever, 38 of Port Orange

  • Charges: Delivery of a controlled substance

Andrew Deperalta, 24 of Ormond Beach

  • Charges: Conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance

Brian Conti, 53 of Port Orange

  • Charges: Conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance

Brandon Barker, 25 of Daytona Beach (already incarcerated)

  • Charges: Conspiracy to traffic a controlled substance

In 2017, there have already been 100 opioid-related deaths in Volusia County. That is compared to 101 occurring in 2016, 111 in 2015 and 76 in 2014. The VCSO is currently investigating 3 homicides that are believed to have been caused by the delivery of opioids to the user.

“Using fentanyl just one time can kill–and that is why it is vital that we continue to aggressively investigate drug trafficking and remove these substances from our streets,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “I firmly believe this investigation saved lives and I am grateful for each law enforcement officer who worked to seize these deadly drugs before they could be sold in our state.”

The agencies involved in this major drug trafficking bust include:

  • Volusia County Sheriff’s Office
  • Flagler County Sheriff’s Office
  • The Attorney’s General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution
  • Daytona Beach Police Department
  • Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety
  • DeLand Police Department
  • Edgewater Police Department

DeLand, FL – According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, a 71-year-old DeLand man was arrested after he recklessly fired several shots in his home and yard, refusing to let his daughter leave.

At around 2 AM on Sunday, October 29, Herbert Tipton began firing shots from his yard on Brevity Lane in response to a suspected intruder. Tipton told his adult daughter that he thought he had shot someone and told her she couldn’t leave the house because the “intruder” may hurt them.

At about 2:20 AM, Tipton began shooting inside the house. Deputies were able to conclude that Tipton was not firing at his daughter. At around 3:05 AM, Tipton’s daughter was able to climb out a bedroom window. A couple minutes later, Tipton peacefully agreed to drop his weapon and climb out of the window as well.

Upon going through the house, several guns and ammunition were found. There was damage from a 12-gauge shotgun in several rooms and a bullet hole through one of the windows. Deputies concluded that the shot into the yard caused no damage or injuries.

Tipton was arrested and taken into custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail. He was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, and false imprisonment.

This was the second time this month in which Tipton was involved in a gun incident. On October 18, a deputy responded to his residence when he armed himself in his front yard to fend off another perceived intruder. The deputy that responded knew Tipton personally and was able to disarm him without incident and place Tipton into protective custody. The same deputy spoke to Tipton during the October 29 incident.

Deltona, FL – A Deltona woman has been arrested after stealing and pawning her disabled father’s gun and knife collection.

The victim and owner of the guns, 58-year-old Robert Carter, suffered a stroke last year and has since been bedridden. His 30-year-old daughter, Crystal Gorman, then moved in to take care of him. On October 13, the victim’s sister reported the collection as missing to Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Carter has been living in a rehabilitation center since September. After Hurricane Irma, Carter was worried about his collection after a tree had fallen on his house in Osteen. He sent his sister and a friend to check on it and they found that 47 firearms and a knife set were missing.

An investigation uncovered that Gorman had been pawning the guns since April 2017. Carter had a list of the most special guns in his collection as well as the serial numbers. Many firearms had already been resold but the ones that were able to be tracked down were identified as Carter’s.

On Thursday, October 26, Gorman was arrested and charged with grand theft, 19 counts of dealing in stolen property and 19 counts of Violation of the Pawn Broker’s Act.

Flagler County, FL – Flagler County residents turned in 150 pounds of expired or unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).

The Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will also pick up the collections and properly dispose of them on Monday.

If you missed Saturday’s Drug Take Back Day, you can still find a location to drop off your expired and unwanted medications. You can find a location by looking here or here.

Flagler Completes County Road 13 Construction $1M Under Budget

Flagler County, FL – Officials have confirmed that the County Road 13 construction project in Espanola has been finished, about $1 million under the budget.

On Thursday, representatives from Flagler County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Halifax Paving, Built-Rite Construction, and SAI Consulting Engineers walked through the completed 3.2-mile project.

“It doesn’t sound like a big project, but it included widening the road and replacing more than 20 culverts to improve drainage. We also installed guardrails to enhance public safety,” said Flagler County Project Administrator, Alex Spiller. “We were also able to include paving three short residential roadways in Espanola.”

County Road 13, which is in-between U.S. 1 and County Road 205, is now mostly complete except for some minor final additions. The construction project began in May of this year and in September, Knox Jones Avenue, Lincoln Street, and Railroad Street were paved in addition to other roadwork in the area.

“We are able to complete a lot of road projects because of the grants we are able to get from the Department of Transportation,” said Faith Alkhatib, Flagler County Engineer.

FDOT granted $242,948 for the project’s design through its Small County Outreach Program (SCOP) and an additional $3.4 million for construction through its Small County Road Assistance Program (SCRAP). Halifax Paving was contracted to complete the construction work, and they were able to do it $1 million under the FDOT budget.

“That money doesn’t come back to Flagler County, but it does become available for FDOT to award to other projects,” said Alkhatib. “It is always a benefit to our residents when we can bring in a project under budget while maintaining high standards.”

Flagler County, FL – The deadline to apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been extended.

Originally, the deadline to submit an application to FEMA was on Thursday, October 9. Last week, FEMA decided to push back the deadline two weeks to Friday, November 24.

“In light of the number of new daily registrations and FEMA’s history of granting extensions in similar disasters, I request the State be granted an additional 15-day extension for Individual Assistance registration,” said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer, Willie G. Nunn.

Residents are encouraged to apply for FEMA assistance online. If you need help with the application or if you have any questions regarding the application, you can call the FEMA helpline number at 800-621-3362 or 800-462-7585 (TTY users).

Flagler County residents may also go to the Disaster Recovery Center at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in East Palatka located at 118 Fairgrounds Road. It is easily accessible from State Road 100 west to U.S. 17. The Center is open from 9 AM to 7 PM on Monday, October 30, through Saturday, 4, and from 9 AM to 1 PM on Sunday, November 5.

At the Center, representatives from FEMA and the Small Business Administration (SBA) will be available to answer questions and help with applications. The SBA provides low-interest loans to small businesses and residents.

“This is very good news for our residents,” said Flagler County Public Safety Emergency Manager, Sally Sherman. “While we certainly don’t recommend that anyone wait until the last minute to file an application, many people have the day after Thanksgiving off work and may be able to use this time to get the applications completed.”
